Do you still offer CXL?
FDA-approved epi-off cross-linking is no longer our first choice. We start by submitting for insurance approval of Epioxa, an epithelium-on (epi-on) cross-linking treatment. If Epioxa is denied, in urgent cases Glaukos may supply Photrexa for epi-off cross-linking.
What is Epioxa, and why is it first?
Epioxa is an epithelium-on (epi-on) cross-linking treatment for keratoconus. It is our first-choice path: we submit your case for insurance approval of Epioxa before considering epi-off options.
What if Epioxa is denied?
If insurance denies Epioxa, and your case is urgent, Glaukos may supply Photrexa for epi-off cross-linking. Your surgeon explains whether that path applies after your keratoconus exam.
What does cross-linking do?
Cross-linking uses riboflavin drops activated by UV-A light to strengthen the collagen in the cornea and slow keratoconus progression. It does not reverse changes that have already happened.
What is the difference between epi-on and epi-off?
Epi-off cross-linking removes the cornea’s surface layer (the epithelium) before treatment. Epi-on treatment leaves that layer in place. Keeping the surface intact is designed to make recovery more comfortable, and candidacy is decided by a full corneal exam.
How is Epioxa paid for?
Epioxa requires insurance approval. We accept PPO plans, not HMO plans or Medi-Cal. Bring your medical insurance card so we can start the approval process after your exam.
Is the keratoconus visit free?
No. Keratoconus care starts with an insurance or cash exam that includes detailed corneal imaging.
Can cross-linking improve my vision?
Cross-linking is mainly about stabilizing the cornea. If your goal is to improve the corneal shape, ask about CTAK.
