Pre-Op Instructions
These steps help ensure a smooth, safe cosmetic pterygium procedure and the best possible outcome.
Contact Lenses
- Soft contact lenses: Stop wearing them 3-7 days before surgery.
- Gas permeable / hard lenses: Stop wearing them 3-4 weeks before surgery (your doctor will confirm your exact timing).
No Scents or Fragrances
Makeup & Skin Care
- Remove all eye and facial makeup at least 24 hours before surgery.
- Best practice: avoid eye makeup for 3 days before surgery.
- Make sure there is no mascara or eyeliner residue along the lashes or lids.
Food, Medications, and Habits
- Have a light meal on the day of your procedure.
- Take your regular medications as instructed by your doctor.
- No smoking on the day of surgery.
- No alcohol on the day of surgery.
Transportation
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from the surgery center.
- You may also need a driver for your 1-day post-op visit.
Artificial Tears (Preservative-Free)
Please purchase a 1-month supply of preservative-free artificial tears before surgery, such as:
- Refresh Plus
- Systane
- Blink
- Optive
Preservative-Free Tears
Use as needed for comfort after surgery, especially during the first few weeks.
Antibiotic Ointment (Maxitrol or Equivalent)
Unless your doctor changes the plan, follow these general guidelines:
- Apply to the operated eye(s) 3 times per day.
- Start 1 day before surgery.
- Continue for 5 days after surgery (or as directed).

What to Bring on Surgery Day
- All prescribed eye drops and ointments.
- A pair of dark sunglasses for the ride home.
