WHAT IS TECNIS MULTIFOCAL LENS?
TECNIS Multifocal lens (TMF) are FDA approved implantable bio compatible lenses. That means they are inert and the body will not reject them. They are manufactured by Johnson and Johnson. They are indicated for primary implantation for the visual correction of aphakia in grown-up patients and also that prefer near, intermediate, as well as distance vision with increased freedom from spectacles.. This aphakia is created when the contents of the cataractous or natural lens have been removed by phacoemulsification These intraocular lenses are meant to be placed in the capsular bag.
Is Tecnis® Multifocal Lens for me?
If you desire to be free from glasses and contact lenses, at all distances than you should consider Tecnis® Multifocal Lens. With TMF you will be able to see near middle and far in each eye.
The Tecnis® Multifocal Lens is an advanced intraocular lens (IOL) that is capable of restoring your full range of vision. At Khanna Vision Institute around 99% of patients who have the TecnisMultifocal Lens implanted in both eyes do not need glasses for any type of activity. This innovative lens is typically used in cataract surgery patients who have presbyopia – a common age-related eye disorder that makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects.
However, the Tecnis Multifocal Lens goes far beyond correcting presbyopia; it can give you the ability to clearly focus on objects at any distance and in any lighting.
Candidates for the Tecnis® Multifocal IOL

Nuts and bolts – the technical info
- The TECNIS ® Multifocal Family of 1-Piece IOLs features the only multifocal lenses efficient in offering a complete range of high-quality vision (20/25 or much better) tailored for every patient lifestyle:
- The sharpest vision across near, intermediate as well as distance vision.
- Optimized for a theoretical near distance of 33 centimeters with the +4.0 D lens. As the add power decreases to a more comforable 40 to 60 cm.
- When contrasted to various other leading multifocal IOLs, TECNIS ® Multifocal IOLs provide Approximately 4x higher image comparison at near distance in low light 5 mm pupil 2x higher image contrast at near distance in normal light 3 mm pupil.
Types of TMF
TECNIS ® Multifocal 1-Piece IOLs have been made available in 3 options so you can provide your patients with outcomes which provide spectacle independence distinctly matched to their visual lifestyles. They are with + 4 add, + 3.25 and + 2.75 add power. Today + 4 has fallen out of favor as the other two provide better intermediate vision with less side effects. They can be mixed and matched to deliver a complete variety of the sharpest vision at all distances.
How Does the Tecnis® Multifocal Lens Work?
When you focus on an object in the distance, the lens will create a clear image for that object. At the same time, a defocused image is created for your near vision, but you will not perceive this.Meanwhile, when you focus on an object up close, the lens will shift to create a sharply defined image for the near object, de-focusing distance objects without you perceiving it. This unique optic design gives the Tecnis® MF IOL the ability to provide clear vision at all distances without requiring any mechanical movement of the lens.
LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY of TMF
TMF are inert and do not induce any reaction from the eye. They have done well in people who have that them for decades. The interesting fact is that vision keeps improving with time. Neuroaccommodation or learning by brain means that even your qare 202/20 the quality of distance vision and speed of reading keep improving.
Side effects of TMF
Well how can a product have so much value with out any side effects? Luckily Tecnis multifocal has minimal issues. Initially haloes and glare are prominent which usually dissipate around 3 months.
Restor vs TMF
Unlike another additional leading IOL restor multifocal, TECNIS ® IOL product is not connected with glistening s, which can inhibit the distance vision. Glistenings cause light scatter, which can result in a reduction in image contrast. This is reported by patients as waxy vision. TMF give good distance vision.
They do well at night and at low light as they allow more light to pass. This means initially TMF will have more glare than Restor IOL.
TMF are also more forgiving with respect to residual astigmatism and dry eyes.
Tecnis multifocal vs symfony
Both lenses are from the same company. Symfony is an EDOF or extended depth of field lens. It yields 2 1/2 zone of vision wheras TMF give all three zones. Patients with Symfony implant see a characteristic spider web pattern instead of glare.
Tecnis multifocal vs Crystalens
Crysatelns is an accommodating lens while TMF is multifocal. So the differences of the two classes apply here.
