Here is how does SMILE Lasik Vision Correction works
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure used to treat myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. It is an alternative to other refractive surgeries like LASIK and PRK. SMILE offers some advantages over traditional methods, including reduced corneal biomechanical disruption, potentially faster healing time, and less dry eye symptoms.
Here’s how the SMILE procedure works:
Instructions before SMILE laser surgery
- Anesthesia and preparation: The eye is numbed with topical anesthetic eye drops. A protective device, called a lid speculum, is used to keep the eye open during the procedure.
- Creating the lenticule: A femtosecond laser is used to create a small, disc-shaped piece of corneal tissue called a lenticule within the corneal stroma (the middle layer of the cornea). The laser also creates a small incision, usually 2-4 millimeters in size, on the corneal surface. The lenticule’s shape and thickness are determined by the patient’s specific refractive error.
- Removing the lenticule: The surgeon carefully separates the lenticule from the surrounding corneal tissue through the small incision, and then removes it from the eye. This extraction results in a change in the corneal shape, which corrects the refractive error.
- For myopia: The central corneal tissue is removed to flatten the cornea and correct nearsightedness.
- For astigmatism: The cornea is reshaped to make it more uniform and correct the irregular curvature.
- Post-surgery care: Since the incision is small, no stitches are required, and it heals naturally. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are prescribed to prevent infection and inflammation. A protective shield may be placed over the eye to avoid rubbing or pressure. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities for a few days.
SMILE is an outpatient procedure and typically takes about 5-10minutes per eye. Most patients notice improved vision within a day or two, but it can take several weeks for the eyes to fully stabilize. As with any vision correction procedure, individual outcomes may vary, and some patients may still require corrective lenses for certain tasks after the surgery.
