Should I Have Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or LASIK?

Although LASIK remains the most popular vision correction surgery, alternative procedures like Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) can provide equally excellent results for certain patients. In fact, RLE may be a better option for patients with a high degree of hyperopia (farsightedness) and/or presbyopia.

Refractive Lens Exchange involves replacing your eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) in order to correct your refractive error and provide sharper focus. This makes it ideal for people who:

  • Are looking to reduce their dependence on reading glasses or bifocals
  • Have extreme hyperopia that causes constant eye fatigue
  • Have an abnormal cornea

RLE is capable of correcting high degrees of hyperopia with excellent results. Visual acuity after RLE is usually better than LASIK in patients with moderate to high degrees of hyperopia.

If you have myopia (nearsightedness), LASIK is still the preferred choice for vision correction, since it does not require the removal of your natural lens. LASIK also tends to be more affordable than RLE.
