Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration

Beverly Hills, Westlake Village, and surrounding areas of Los Angeles, California

Macular degeneration is the primary cause of vision loss in Americans over the age of 65. Altogether, over 1.75 million people in the United States suffer from macular degeneration, and experts estimate that by the year 2020, this figure will increase to 3 million. Macular degeneration is an age-related eye disorder that involves the deterioration of the macula: the layer of tissue in the center of your retina that is responsible for maintaining sharp central vision.

Symptoms of Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration causes a gradual loss of vision, but the symptoms are usually not painful. If you are developing macular degeneration, you may notice:

  • Fuzzy or distorted vision
  • Shadowy areas in the central portion of your vision
  • Need brighter light for reading
  • Trouble adapting to dimmer light levels
  • Colors appear faded or less intense
  • Trouble recognizing faces

Typically, macular degeneration begins to develop once you have passed the age of 45, which is why it is important to see your ophthalmologist for regular eye exams and screenings.

Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry macular degeneration occurs when the cells in your macula begin to degenerate and die off, leading to blurry central vision. This form of macular degeneration can cause central vision loss, but most patients still maintain their peripheral (side) vision. Dry macular degeneration can affect one or both eyes; it is possible to have good vision in one eye that makes up for the poor central vision in your other eye.

Wet Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is caused by blood vessels growing beneath your retina. Because they are fragile, these vessels will end up leaking blood and fluid, causing the macula to swell. This results in decreased vision. If you have wet macular degeneration, lines that previously appeared straight may suddenly seem curved. If this is happening to you, seek treatment from Los Angeles eye doctor Dr. Khanna as soon as possible. Wet macular degeneration can cause rapid loss of central vision if it is not addressed quickly.

If you have further questions about macular degeneration, please contact The Khanna Institute or call (888) 339-8143 to schedule an appointment. We serve patients throughout the Los Angeles and Beverly Hills area of California.
