What is Keratoconus? Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease by which the, normally round, cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This cone shape deflects light as it enters the eye on its way to the light-sensitive retina, causing distorted vision.

What Causes Keratoconus? Keratoconus is caused by the weakening and thinning of the cornea, which can be caused by many different risk factors. A new study suggest that the weakening of the cornea may be caused by an an imbalance of enzymes within the cornea, which then causes the cornea to be more susceptible to oxidative damage, causing weakening, thinning, and for the cornea to bulge.

Risk Factors: Risk factors that can cause the weakening of the cornea include:

Genetic Predisposition: Certain genes inherited trough your parents express abnormal proteins. These can lead to the production of weak collagen which is the principal building block of the fibers of the Cornea. So It is often that Keratoconus affects more than one member of the same family.

Environmental Factors: There are a few environmental factors that can increase one's chances of developing Keratoconus, these factors include: Overexposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, history of poorly fitted contacts, chronic eye irritation, and rubbing of the eye.

Treatments for Keratoconus

Dr. Khanna has specialized in Keratoconus treatments for 25+ years. Depending on the progression of the Keratoconus there are three different types of procedures to halt the progressive eye disease, preserve vision, and improve vision.

Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL)

Corneal Cross-linking is a non invasive procedure in which cornea hardening eye drops are placed in the eye. The patient is then placed under an UV light. The combination of drops and UV light strengthens the Cornea causing the progression of Keratoconus to seize.

Intacs surgery is a procedure in which the doctor makes a small incision in your cornea and places two crescent-shaped plastic rings at the outer edge. The rings flatten your cornea and change the way light rays focus on your retina.

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL)

ICL is an implantable Lens for correcting vision. The lens is place between the cornea and the iris. ICL used with higher prescriptions and Keratoconus patients as an alternative to LASIK vision correction.
